    Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for getting this thread started! Such an important topic. Great discussion and tips from Alison, Tom and Karen. Wanted to add that I use a Google alert for words ie daily money manager, AADMM, DMM so that whenever these are used, it will pop up in my email. It’s a great way to stay on top of this when you have limited time.

I know it might not seem like it, but AADMM has been called upon more often to contribute to articles relevant to our industry, and here’s one that was recently published (November 2019). I spoke with the writer, Miriam Cross back in October. She also wanted to interview elder victims of fraud for her piece. https://www.kiplinger.com/article/retirement/T048-C000-S002-watch-out-for-the-elder-fraud-web.html?fbclid=IwAR0pScFhQJyTafQ7VlzMcleloA6vq9TIoIu4IVzWe27srYvK1jvb-Ofb8-w

I happen to a big fan of Jean Chatzky, longtime personal finance writer who published her latest book, Women with Money in 2019. Jean’s researcher contacted AADMM in the summer of 2018 and I spoke with her. She included AADMM as a resource in the book. I took it with me on vacation and posted a pic on LinkedIn thanking her for the great information and for including AADMM. Here’s the post link which I shared with AADMM members on social media. https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:65364382725860512077/

I’ve since spoken with her when she had a question about who provides oversight of DMM work. So I know we still have a lot of work to do, but over the past 8 years, I’ve seen much more interest and awareness about AADMM and DMMs. I’m excited for the new website and what we’ll be doing to increase awareness even more in the new year. Thanks again for all the comments!

    Hi Jacquelyn,

I just saw your request as I was going to look at another forum question, so wanted to add my 2cents. My tagline is “Money Matters But People Matter More” which speaks to my DMM work as well as my social work background which has always been client-centered. I have liked several others but they were already “taken” so I’ll keep this for now. Good luck!

    Hello Alix,

This issue has come up a lot with new DMMs as well as with those who’ve been around for awhile. For me it’s been easier to say I pay bills and organize the finances for seniors (older adults) and veterans and in this role, I am a Daily Money Manager. People are usually interested in how I came into this profession since I’m also a clinical social worker. I tell them about AADMM and that DMMs are financial professionals who work with a wide variety of clients of all ages. Anyone who has difficulty managing their money could use the services of a DMM, as well as people who don’t like dealing with their finances or feel overwhelmed by them.
Most people tell me that this is such a needed service and they wish they had heard of us earlier or else they are glad to know we exist and plan to contact me when they “need to”. The good news is more people are hearing about us, from articles in magazines or newspapers to DMMs getting the word out on LinkedIn and Facebook, so things are a changing 🙂 Thanks for your post!

    Hi Bill,

Good for you to be thinking about your brand. I commend you and your girlfriend/branding coach! I work primarily with seniors, veterans and their families but also did some financial coaching with younger people which was a very different animal. I did not include the coaching under my DMM brand as that might have been confusing to the referral partners in my network. I did a lot of Financial education seminars/workshops/ to build my brand as a financial expert (I always clarified that I am not a financial advisor, etc) and went to the senior centers, local senior programs (Alzheimers and Dementia) where my clients were being served. I’m also on the resource list for my county as a DMM for seniors and as a DMM vendor for a membership program for 55+. I recommend you reach out to some of the experienced DMMs/PDMMs in AADMM who work with high net worth individuals of all ages, but my best advice for working with seniors is earning their trust by listening, providing information of value (at no charge) so they get to know you as a trusted individual who understands their issues. Working with seniors requires a slower pace and relationship building that may not be necessary with other clients, so you may need to adjust your calendar accordingly. Wishing you all the best!

    Hello Steven,

Great to hear that you’re planning to do presentations for senior centers and facilities! I’ve done a number of those and would be happy to share my powerpoint presentations with you. I initially started with the AADMM PPT about daily money management and then used information about fraud, financial exploitation and identity theft that I got from the National Council on Aging website https://www.ncoa.org/ The Public Awareness/Public Relations committee just met and we plan to utilize information from NCOA for AADMM’s campaign on Fraud during International Fraud Week in November and there’s a lot of good info on there as well (less specific to seniors tho) http://www.fraudweek.com/ I am working on a presentation for May 22nd so I’ve been reviewing my powerpoints on Elder abuse and other information which I’d be glad to share. My email address is barbara@marysdaughterllc.com I also have other topics I’ve done, such as having conversations with loved ones about finances, etc. I do like the tax topic you mentioned which is very timely. Looking forward to connecting with you. Also open to a phone chat as well if you prefer.

    Thanks!

    Hi Janis,

Actually received this email just as I was scanning a dozen documents which I was able to send without a problem using my Android phone and the Genius Scan app. I looked at the list of recommended scanner apps we received from Beth Z. our keynote speaker at the annual conference. I have no need for a fax but when I did need one for a document earlier this year, I went to Staples and used their fax for a small fee.

I wouldn’t invest in a fax but I’ve heard other DMMs report that they can only send some documents via fax for security reasons. I can encrypt my scans if I choose and that is what I’m using now.

Yes, I agree! I’m considering switching over in January. Thanks for the mention Stacey and Steve. I like the customer service the waveapps seem to offer!

    Roxanne,
That is a great point, and a good suggestion as well! Especially considering our time constraints. I actually thought about that when I made my comment at the end of the last session. I was aware people can’t always hear in the back so I wanted to make sure there were no other questions before I went up to the microphone. I love the idea of using these forums more and appreciate the explanation that these take the place of the listserv of previous years!

    Thanks!
